"To practice any art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow.
So do it."
'A man without a country'
This course introduces video as a medium for artistic expression, personal and social inquiry. Participants gain an understanding of the video art-making process and develop proficiency with video equipment, using single-camera shooting and non-linear editing.
Participants will be guided through assigned work in exploration of video as an art-making tool. Theoretical texts and work by video artists will be viewed and discussed.
This course provides the participants with the technological and conceptual groundwork in video art including the use of digital cameras, sound recording and digital editing. As we work to understand what makes compelling moving images that elicit powerful intellectual and emotional responses, the teaching goals include mastering the basic elements of video making: duration, composition, light, color, relationships between sound and image, as well as creative approaches to editing such as dramatic continuity and montage.
This 16 week course also explores the range of techniques and languages of creative video making from traditional story genres to more contemporary experimental forms. The course consists of a weekly lecture including screenings, discussions, and production workshops in which the participants receive hands-on instruction and produce a series of short exercises and a final project.
