'A man without a country'
Sophia Demetriou was born in London. For twenty years she was living and working in Athens and London and now moved in Cyprus.
She studied Sculpture at Athens School of Fine Art, ranking first in the entrance examinations. She received her Master in Sculpture (practice-led research) at Chelsea College of Art, through the College she worked as researcher for the project ‘Arts School Educated’ for Wimbledon School of Art at Tate Britain. She had solo and group exhibitions in Europe, participated in residencies in the UK and received public and private commissions. In 2017, she was an invited artist to create a chalk drawing on wall for the project of the designer Mia Jafari which was funded from Arts Council England.
Before relocating to Cyprus, she had her latest sculpture project at the Residency of Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop (ESW). She was invited from the director to be in the selection panel for a graduate award in ESW, through the showcase ‘New Contemporaries’, at Royal Scottish Academy. In parallel with her artistic activity, she taught sculpture in Athens and London.
